Dr. Jud Newborn

Jud Newborn, PhD, is a New York-based author, lecturer and expert on anti-Semitism, extremism and the fight for human rights worldwide. He is also a lyricist and poet. A pioneer in the creation of Holocaust museums, Dr. Newborn served as Founding Historian and curator of NY’s Museum of Jewish Heritage. His dramatic lecture performances have taken him from L.A.’s Wiesenthal Center, San Diego’s Old Globe Theater and major universities and religious institutions to NY’s National Arts Club, the United Nations, and from Canada to Cape Town.  Educated at New York University, Cambridge University and the University of Chicago, Dr. Newborn was awarded his PhD with Distinction, following three years of European fieldwork as a Fulbright Fellow.  During this time he hunted down former SS officers and briefly worked underground for Poland’s Solidarity Freedom Movement in 1982, 6 months into Communist military rule.  In his UN lecture--the first ever held there on the Holocaust--Dr. Newborn put aside protocol to call out against the UN’s abandonment of Bosnia’s Muslim population to mass murder. Dr. Newborn has written for The New York Times and The Jerusalem Post among other leading publications, and collaborated as a lyricist with artists ranging from top country songwriters to Pulitzer Prize winning composer Shulamit Ran. He has appeared as a consultant throughout the media, from the CBS Morning News, CNN and other networks, to NPR’s “All Things Considered.” Today he serves as Special Projects Curator for the renowned Cinema Arts Centre, LI, bringing in today’s most celebrated actors and directors for special appearances.

LIBRARY JOURNAL SINGLES OUT DR. JUD NEWBORN’S SOPHIE SCHOLL AND THE WHITE ROSE FOR STARRED REVIEW. NEWBORN TELLS THE TRUE STORY OF FORMER HITLER YOUTH FANATICS WHO TRANFORMED INTO THE GREATEST HEROES OF THE GERMAN ANTI-NAZI RESISTANCE—AND LINKS THEM TO TODAY’S MOST COMPELLING ISSUES. Germans vote Sophie Scholl among top 10 most important Germans of all time!

The prestigious Library Journal—the gold-standard publication for the library trade— recently singled out Holocaust and Human Rights expert Dr. Jud Newborn’s new book, SOPHIE SCHOLL AND THE WHITE ROSE, for a starred review, declaring it “superbly written” and “essential for public and academic history collections.” The book, which fills in the entire story to the recent Oscar-nominated German film, “Sophie Scholl: The Final Days,” inspires us to speak out today for freedom & our shared humanity.

Revealing a totally new angle on Holocaust history with unusually strong universal appeal, inspirational power and dramatic current events relevance—Dr. Newborn’s book tells how Sophie Scholl and her older brother Hans, both former Hitler Youth fanatics, rejoined humanity to become the greatest heroes and Christian martyrs of Germany’s anti-Nazi resistance. Dubbing themselves “the White Rose,” Sophie, Hans and a handful of other university students daringly distributed thousands of leaflets from 1942 to 1943, calling on their countrymen to wake up to the mass murder of Jews. “We will not be silent,” they wrote. “We are your bad conscience. The White Rose will not leave you in peace!” Mounting a gallery high above the University of Munich’s vast atrium in early 1943, they dropped hundreds of leaflets on the heads of students, in the ONLY public protest by Germans EVER to occur against the Nazis. Immediately arrested, they were vilified by Hitler’s “Hanging Judge” and beheaded. But their message did not die with them. Ina recent nation-wide TV competition to choose the top ten most important Germans of all time, German voters under the age of 40 catapulted Sophie and Hans to fourth place— winning over Bach, Goethe, Gutenberg, Bismarck, Willy Brandt and Albert Einstein!

According to AUTHOR JUD NEWBORN (Ph.D., Univ. of Chicago)—co-creator of NY’s Holocaust museum, a seasoned on-camera expert and worldwide lecturer on the lessons of the Holocaust for today’s most compelling current events—“Their courageous deeds put all breaking news and controversies about human rights, social responsibility and courage in powerful perspective. The White Rose demonstrate the need to speak up in the name of freedom and our shared humanity—not only abroad, but here at home. Affirming President Obama’s message, their inspiring example demonstrates that words really DO count.
